Real Life Example
Lets put this into some real life examples. Lets say you want to open up a new shop in a new town where you do not currently have a shop, is it your digital strategy that made that decision? Did it do the market research, found the right location? No?, I didn’t think so either. Or was it the digital strategy that caused customers to come through the front door and make purchases? No of course not. It’s your business strategy, digital enablement is there to make your life easier. What that means is that once you have chosen your shop, location etc etc and it comes time for customers to buy things you are going to need the tools to take eftpos transactions and keep customer records, maybe you want a screen in your shop showing a video about a certain product, this is all digital enablement, it’s a strategic investment but not a Digital strategy, it is making your business strategy work in a digital world. Yes you should have a roadmap as to where your technology is going, yes in most cases it makes sense to make a digital template so you can repeat what you do over and over again with success but to make a pure digital strategy is a waste of your time and money.
The problem with technology
The problem is that smart people just like yourselves most of the time know very little about technology and are forced to trust the advice given to you by sales people (Which is no fault of your own). Chances are you do not know the right questions to ask and overall are risking a huge capital investment on something that may or may not work for you. As businesses grow there exists a very real need to design what your infrastructure, software etc is going to look like and know how this is going to enable you to do business and get a return on your investment. Likewise with your website, you are often approached by a slick sales person offering to transform your website and promising the earth in results to you. So you spend thousands only to find business isn’t that much better but you have a nice looking website…
